Backgrounds
Ten backgrounds written for Tyria — each one ties your character to a faction, a city or an event of the campaign — plus the five classic SRD backgrounds.
Wandering Knight
TyriaAthletics, Persuasion
Code of Honor
You swore an oath to a cause, not to a lord. Knights, soldiers and nobles recognize your standing even without lands. You can claim food and shelter in any castle or garrison, and soldiers treat you with respect. Like Sir Tomas and Sir Arthuro Viktor, you answer the call when the cause is just.
Spy of the Five Rings
TyriaDeception, Investigation · Thieves’ tools, Disguise kit
Ghost Network
You belonged — or still belong — to the spy network of the Five Rings. You know the recognition signs, the crossing points and the safe caches. You can identify a Five Rings agent by their manners or codes, and you know how to send messages through the network. The network can also track you.
Miner of Lower Pipon
TyriaAthletics, Perception · Smith’s tools
Underground Lore
You grew up in the tunnels of Lower Pipon. You always know which way is north underground, you identify ores and geological hazards by instinct, and you know the secret passages between Lower Pipon and the surface. The Pipon goblins recognize you as a brother of the mines.
Merchant of Ubato
TyriaPersuasion, Insight
Blessing of Trade
You are blessed by Ubato, god of merchants and luck. You can always find a buyer or a seller for any goods, even in the most remote places. Ubato’s merchants recognize each other and help each other — you have access to a trade network stretching from the Chull Lands to the ports of Tel Vyl.
Awakened
TyriaArcana, Intimidation
Memory from Beyond
You died and came back. The Dread Plane spat you out thanks to Kronos’ temporal reset. Fragmented memories of the afterlife give you an edge when dealing with undead and ethereal creatures — they recognize you as one of their own. Ansel Gone hunts you, but the Order of the Black Sun protects you.
Soldier of Borak
TyriaAthletics, Intimidation
Military Rank
You served in the Borak garrison under General Emri. Lower-ranking soldiers respect and obey you. You can access military installations, requisition basic supplies, and you know Tyria’s chain of command. The Fist of Dawn recognizes you as a brother in arms.
Agent of the Black Sun
TyriaStealth, Investigation · Thieves’ tools
Network of the Order
You are an agent of the Order of the Black Sun, founded by Altof Doombringer. You know the Order’s recognition signs, hidden refuges and contacts in the great cities. You can ask other agents for help and information, and you have access to intelligence reports on supernatural threats. In exchange, the Order may hand you missions.
Felarin Caravaneer
TyriaPerception, Survival
Moon Roads
You travelled with the Felarin caravans across the steppes between Tyria and the Chull Lands. You know the safe routes, the watering holes, the seasonal dangers and the merchant contacts in every town. You can always find your way by night from the stars, and the Felarin welcome you as a caravan brother.
Engineer of Chull
TyriaArcana, Sleight of Hand · Tinker’s tools
Genius of Ubato
You trained in the workshop-cities of the Chull Lands, blessed by Ubato the Divine Architect. You automatically identify an item’s basic magical properties after handling it for 1 minute. The Chull Kobolds recognize you as a craftsman and share their engineering secrets. Given time and tools, you can repair any mechanical object.
Exile of the Seas
TyriaAthletics, Nature · Navigator’s tools
Child of the Ocean
You lived at sea — as a sailor of the Stormcaller, an exiled sahuagin, or a shipwreck survivor. You can predict sea weather 24 hours ahead, navigate the open sea without charts, and sailors and fishermen trust you instinctively. Captain Belinda Doombringer or one of her officers would recognize you.
